Have you ever wondered why you are who you are? I think about this often. Obviously we know we are just born with certain things that make us, US! :) I think that is pretty awesome. But, I also know and believe that we are shaped by the experiences we have and the interactions we have with other people. This is called symbolic interaction! Talking about symbolic interaction has made me reflect on how my experiences and interactions have shaped me. First I think about the experiences I had growing up. I have always known and felt that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day saints is true. But, sometimes growing up in Pennsylvania was difficult for me. I was surrounded by people who didn't have the same standards or morals as me. I was, for the most part, the only member of my church in my school and at one point I had no other kids my age in my church! I often times made poor choices. These periods of my life were lonely and to be honest difficult. I remember feeling utterly alone and wishing that my life was something different. Or at least that I wasn't alone. As I look back at these experiences now, I would never change them. I look back now and realize it strengthened me. It cemented my testimony of Jesus Christ. I had to rely completely on Christ as one of my truest best friends. I realize that He was always with me and I truly never was alone. For most of these lonely periods my Mom was my teacher in church. At that time in my life it may have felt a little difficult for me to be alone and then have my Mom be my teacher. Now, I cherish those moments and memories we had together. It made me appreciate my Mom. I could see and feel her testimony and love of the Savior as she patiently taught and selflessly loved her imperfect daughter. I firmly believe I have the testimony and love of Christ that I have because of my incredible Mother. We have a very strong and close relationship and often are able to share our testimonies and love of the Savior with each other. I know we were connected long before we came to earth. She holds an incredibly special spot in my heart. Not only did I have a wonderful Mother but, of course I had an incredible Father who supported me and loved me regardless of my rebellious and stupid choices. I had other incredible people who helped me. Some wonderful women in the ward who were constants and taught me by their actions the love they had for the Savior. They were incredible examples of Christ who helped shape me and know that it is possible to be a strong woman of God who loved the Savior and loved the gospel. With all my heart I believe the experiences I faced in high school shaped a huge part of who I am today. As hard as they were I would never replace them. My love for my Savior and the gospel are stronger than they've ever been in my whole life. I look back at my experiences and interactions with others and know that thanks to them I am who I am today. Now, I'm absolutely not saying I'm perfect but, I am saying I would probably be in a lot worse shape if it hadn't been for my experiences and interactions. I know that hard times truly shape us and are eased as we rely and lean on the Savior and the people whose blessed us with in our lives, especially our families! God is good, all the time God is good.<3 xox, Sarah
